Greetings!

I survived the first month of my apprenticeship, but more importantly, I survived UTD's weeks of welcome! Since August 14th, we have been on-campus meeting students. I have met students through our FOCUS games nights and through university-sponsored events like the Big Howdy. The game nights were simple to execute; we would meet in a residence hall and invite newly moved-in students to play games. The second event I mentioned, Big Howdy, welcomed international students to campus. The turnout was about 1400 students from all over the globe. It was amazing! The atmosphere was lively as live music played and students bustled from table to table, trying to complete a checklist. We were able to tell so many students about our ministry because visiting the FOCUS booth was one of the checks. During this event, I met a sweet grad student named Ellie.

Ellie is from China and is at UTD for a masters in accounting. She is super trendy and easy to talk to. We ended up exchanging numbers and meeting that next week. We got coffee and went to World Market. Our first time hanging out was full of us discussing how we grew up, our interests and laughing at how my last name is a restaurant. I am excited about the friendship God is building between us. Be praying for her and all the other international students FOCUS is reaching out to.

Last but not least, my small group is in full swing. It's always so much fun to see who God brings. Be praying for God to work through our conversations and build true friendships.

  1. Hey Emily! I love that you got to make a new friend at Big Howdy. UTD has so many international students who have never learned about Jesus before, and it's a great opportunity to befriend them and introduce them to our amazing God. Also it's such an encouragement to me that UTD now has so many welcome events. When I started there, there was basically nothing! Glad you get to be a part of it.

August 2023: Is Bucee Going to FOCUS?

Greetings from Buc-ee's Above is a photo from Buc-ee's on the fourth of July. We got to met the celebrity beaver while visiting my family.  For any of my out of state friends, Buc-ee's is a huge gas station and this beaver is their face and mascot. I just had to get a photo of these two with him.  Here's a photo from our church's dog event. The guy above's name is Mauricio. The dog he is holding is his. We had a good laugh that his beloved dog was a pampered shih Tzu. He and Graham have become great friends over the year. He will be leading in the fall. Pray for our men's side of the ministry. What happens every four years or so is that many of our people graduate. We are coming into this year with fewer men leaders. Pray for them to have courage and boldness to reach out on campus to their classmates, friends and whoever. I'm hopeful with guys like Mauricio that we will meet the people God wants us to this year.  Ministry-wise, we have begun the prepara...

August Update!

This update is full of prayer requests and news! Let’s get started.  I just got back from our summer staff retreat with our entire staff team. One of the key parts I want to underline is: we have not had our entire staff together on a retreat since my apprentice year. Our staff has boomed in size because we are taking on nineteen apprentices this year. Nineteen. It’s exciting to experience a surge of new people and to see our team grow. I had a strange moment during the retreat where I realized some of these apprentices were students when I started back in 2018. Now, I get to partner with them in reaching our campuses this fall. I guess that’s what happens the longer you work at a place.  One of the most exciting updates I have is that we will be pioneering five new campuses this fall. Each team is focusing on a different campus. One thing that has blown me away during my time in FOCUS is how the Lord has worked on community college campuses. I remember visiting a Colli...

January Update!

Happy New Year! We are back! Students are on school and we are preparing for our annual winter retreat. I hope yall had a restful Christmas season. Ours was made sweeter by having little Bonnie around. I found myself looking forward for future Christmases as Bonnie grows and becomes more aware. It is so exciting to think of the ways we will get to point our little girl towards Jesus using the excitement and truth of Christmas.  Anyways, our last semester ended with a bang. We threw an awesome formal for our students. It is special getting to plan these events that make college so memorable for them. Below is a photo of our TCC students. I was blown away by how close these students have gotten over the year. It can be hard getting people to buy into being friends. TCC has really grown close and it's always the highlight of my week meeting with them. Pray that we will use our community on TCC's campus to be a light to students who don't know Christ. Pray for new students to g...
